M3I Youth Empowerment Model™ was developed by veteran youth activists at RSCG to improve the efficiency, communication, and impact of activism and advocacy efforts. Short for “Motivate, Manage, and Measure Influence,” the M3I Model™ focuses on the alignment of volunteer and coordinator efforts, synchronizing a campaign’s objectives and the paths to reach them. By standardizing the steps to get involved in a campaign, both volunteers and coordinators can focus their time and energy on inspired action.

The key concept of M3I is the “measure of influence.” A measure of influence is a tangible item that supports the campaign’s objectives. For example, a single signature on a petition or a unique visitor to a website could both be measures of influence. M3I organizes campaign objectives and measures of influence, making it easier for volunteers to take action. The model organizes campaigns and then identifies measures of influence for each campaign, offering each measure of influence as a project for youth to lead. This model allows standardization of participation while allowing volunteers to define how they will reach the maximum measures of influence.

For example, imagine an anti-tobacco youth movement. One of the current efforts of the movement is to motivate an indoor-smoking ban in their community. This becomes the “Campaign” in the M3I Model. The “objectives” are then defined as to increase awareness of the risk of secondhand smoke and to increase the number of voters that would support the ban. The campaign identifies many “measures of influence”, including a petition and unique hits to a website. Now the organization introduces the measures of influence to its youth volunteers and allows them to plan projects to reach one of the measures. Some youth may perform demonstrations in high traffic areas to generate petition signatures while others may simply go to their friends and relatives. The model standardizes how youth get involved by defining projects while not limiting the creativity involved in the execution of those projects.

The M3I Model improves campaign communications, activity, and management while increasing volunteer and youth empowerment.
